The Dubai Metro is the only mass spine that makes a car-optional day honest. Abu Dhabi does not give you the same spine; do not copy-paste this page there. Sharjah connects by bus and taxi more than by metro.
Lines as a plan, not a map souvenir
Red Line covers the corridor people actually use: expo-side through Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall toward the airport and the harbour end. Green Line is the older city — Creek, Al Rigga, the denser east. Transfers at Union and BurJuman are the junctions where a “quick hop” becomes stairs, heat, and a missed connection.
Friday service has historically started later than weekday mornings. That single fact wrecks 08:00 museum plans more often than any closed ticket window. Confirm in the S’hail or RTA app the night before. Last trains are late, not infinite; if your dusk plan ends at Jebel Ali and your hotel is in Deira, the clock is the plan.
Peak loads run like any working city: inbound in the morning, mixed through the middle, outbound and leisure in the evening. A tourist standing left on an escalator is not a crime. A tourist blocking a door in July while deciding whether this is their station is how the carriage becomes a greenhouse.
| Move | Why it works | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Mall via Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station | indoor arrival | outdoor crossing if you exit the wrong door |
| Creek / Al Fahidi via Green | older grain | mid-day alleys without shade |
| Airport without a car | Red Line | luggage + Friday start |
| Marina waterfront at dusk | train + short deck | noon photos on the unshaded walk |

Nol and the last 400 metres
Buy or top up a Nol card before you are on a platform with a queue behind you. The last 400 metres — station to lobby — is where summer days die. We prefer stations that dock into malls and hotels over “iconic” exits onto unshaded arterials.
Gold Class carriages are a comfort tool in rush hour, not a personality. If the train is empty at 10:30 on a Wednesday, you do not need them. If the train is a wall of people at 18:10 on a Thursday, they are a planning object like water.
Buses fill the holes the metro cannot. They are slower and more exposed at stops. In summer we treat a bus wait as outdoor time and therefore as a dawn/dusk object unless the stop is covered and short.
